University of Nebraska was founded as a Morrill Act land grant institution on February 15, 1869 in Lincoln Nebraska. Lincoln is a city of nearly 300,000 people and it offers a wide array of venues that will always allow students to find something new and interesting to do. There is an extensive bike trail network, 65 indoor and outdoor tennis courts, 11 public swimming pools and aquatic centers and 2 disc golf courses to go along with abundant employment opportunities and a low cost of living. Of course campus activities will keep most undergraduates busy whether it is student government, civic engagement, Greek life or spots clubs there are more than 570 recognized student organizations at UNL where each student can find their niche.
The student population at UNL is not as diverse as many colleges it’s size. Of the more than 20,000 undergraduates three quarters are Caucasian. The next largest ethnic group at eight percent is non-resident alien. Hispanic students make up seven percent of the population and there are as many mixed race students as there are Black and Asian students on campus at three percent each. Female students comprise 48% of the student population and 75% of the students are from within the state of Nebraska.
The university is made up of nine academic colleges. The most popular major by far is business. Engineering is a distant second and it is followed closely by Agriculture. These three majors account for approximately 43% of all the undergraduates at the university. A couple of the marque programs are the Architectural Engineering (BS-MS) that allows the student to graduate in five years with a Masters of Architectural Engineering and the Bachelors of Fine arts with an emphasis in Emerging Media Arts offered at the Johnny Carson Center for Emerging Media Arts.
Getting accepted to the University of Nebraska requires an approximate GPA of 3.58 with an ACT score around 25 or an SAT score of 1200-1230. Students applying with statistics similar to these will be automatically considered for most merit scholarships. To be considered for leadership and diversity scholarships, applicants must write a 500-word essay all about their focus on leadership, career goals and community service. UNL is a Common Application school and even though they have rolling admissions, it is a good idea to get all your application materials submitted before the end of October.
