The University of Minnesota is located in Minneapolis Minnesota. Minneapolis and St Paul are commonly known as the “Twin Cities” and are separated by the Mississippi River for all but a two and a half mile stretch of land.
While UM offers majors from liberal arts to science and engineering their most popular majors are in the areas of Biology, Engineering, Social Sciences and Business/Marketing. Outside the classroom there are research opportunities, and community engagement experiences that prepare students to be leaders, innovators, and global citizens.
The size of the freshman class in 2019 was 6,100 students. The middle 50% of this class had a grade point average of 3.6 – 3.8, ACT scores of 27 – 32, the SAT scores of 1310 – 1460. University officials understand that there have been interruptions in the ability to sit for SAT and ACT exams for seniors graduating in 2021, so they are extending the deadlines for submission of those scores. Test score submission can be self-reported but official scores are required before enrollment.
Tuition for students from outside the state of Minnesota is approximately $44,000. There are merit-based scholarships to help defer some of that expense and applicants receive automatic consideration scholarships as well as admission to the honors program. There is no need to complete additional paperwork because the admissions application is used for the review of merit scholarships. The financial aid form required to access financial need is the FAFSA. Fill it out even if you think there is no way you will qualify for financial aid. The average financial aid package at UM is $14,956 and the university has traditionally met 77% of financial need.
So, how do you apply to the University of Minnesota? They accept the Coalition, common, and institutional applications. Early action admission deadline is November 1st; regular admission deadline is January 1st.
If you are wondering what there is to do in addition to studying and attending classes, Minneapolis is the 16th-largest metropolitan area in the United States. The university supports 23 varsity athletic teams and there are 3,400 students involved in Greek Life. There are more than 900 student organizations and 130 nations are represented in the student population. If you can’t find something to do on or around campus, you are simply not trying.
