Texas College is a small, 4-year, private liberal arts college in an urban setting. This Historically Black College was founded in the Spring of 1894 by ministers affiliated with the Christian Methodist Episcopal (CME) Church. It was the start of the educational process for a group of disenfranchised individuals in the area of east Texas, City of Tyler.
Tyler is the largest city in Northeast Texas It was named for John Tyler, the tenth President of the United States. The population is over 100,000 and it has several museums, historic sites, parks, the Tyler Municipal Rose Garden, Tiger Creek Wildlife Refuge, Kiepersol Estates Winery & Vineyards and the Caldwell Zoo. Tyler is known as the “Rose Capital of America” because of a long history of rose production, cultivation, and processing. It’s 14-acre rose garden is the largest in the United States. The Tyler Rose Garden is also home to the annual Texas Rose Festival which attracts thousands of tourists each October.
The Charter for Texas College indicates that it is to operate under the supervision care and ownership of the CME Church in America. The educational direction included the education of youths, male and female, in all branches of a literary, scientific and classical education wherein shall be taught theology, normal training of teachers, music, commercial and industrial training, and agricultural and mechanical sciences. Today, the college complies with its founding principles in that it remains open to all individuals without discrimination on the grounds of national origin, race, religion, or sex…with the right to offer instruction in the areas of Arts and Sciences, Humanities, Natural Sciences, Social Sciences and preparation of teachers. It is home to 940 undergraduate students. At present, the makeup of the student population is 2 percent White, 82 percent Black, 10 percent Latino, 2 percent Two or more races, 3 percent Non-Resident Alien and 45 percent of the students are women. Social Sciences is the primary major at Texas College with 33 percent of the student population. Business/Marketing is a close second at 28 percent and Education is the third most popular major at 15 percent. When students are not busy studying or in class, there are 12 men’s and women’s NAIA athletic teams to support as well as fraternities, sororities and a variety of clubs and organizations.
Texas College has an open admissions policy and applicants can apply using the colleges online application. The estimated cost of attendance is $24,108 but grants, scholarships, work study and loans are all available to help students pay for their education.
