Introducing Indiana University

In 1820 Indiana University was founded as a state seminary in Bloomington Indiana and classes began in 1823 with 10 male students. Things have changed a little since then.

From its original 10 acres south of downtown, IU Bloomington has grown to nearly 2,000 acres in the northeast quadrant of the city. With over 750 student groups on campus, great restaurants in the city of Bloomington, the country’s largest bike race, a great music scene and the largest state park in Indiana, Indiana University offers a tremendous opportunities for the student seeking a rich and interactive college experience.

Though IU has a reputation of encouraging a diverse student population, the largest number of non-white students is the 8% Non-Resident Alien group. One contributing factor to the imbalance in diversity is that 64% of the student population comes from within the state of Indiana.

IU is test optional for general admission and scholarships and the admission application is used for scholarship consideration. Both consideration for scholarships and for the honors program are automatic.

The university is composed of 12 colleges – each with its own career services office and its own study abroad office. The most popular colleges are music and business, but it should be noted that four of the language programs are available in coordination with the department of defense. There are only two departments that do not directly admit applicants; they are nursing and business and each must monitor their numbers carefully.

Undergraduates have opportunities to get involved in research, to study abroad, do internships and design an individualized program of study to enhance their chosen major. On the lighter side, the student population supports 22 NCAA Division 1 sports teams as well as 40 sports clubs for the not-so-serious athlete.

The general size of the freshman class is about 8,300. Successful applicants have an average GPA of 3.86, an ACT in the range of 25-32 and an SAT score in the 1180-1380 range. Students who apply to IU from out of state can expect a tuition of $36,512 plus $10,830 for room & board.
