Howard Payne University is a small, 4-year, private university, and liberal arts college. This coed institution is in Brownwood, TX, a large town that provides a rural setting. The College was founded in 1889. Its name is in honor of the largest donor supporting the creation of the college. In 1953 the Episcopal College of the Southwest consolidated with Howard Payne College, and in 1974, Howard Payne College became Howard Payne University upon approval of the Baptist General Convention of Texas.
Brownwood is the county seat of Brown County. Its population was 19,288 according to the 2010 census. The city makes the most of its rural environment boasting 19 parks spread out over Brownwood totaling 317 acres. The parks are home to 105 picnic sites, 15 restroom facilities, 11 playgrounds, and eight basketball courts. The city maintains two municipal swimming pools, the 12-field with baseball & softball Massey Sports Complex, and a 22-field soccer complex. There is a disc golf course, hiking trails, boat ramps, fishing, pavilions, nature trail, paddling trail, RV areas, tennis courts and volleyball courts. Each year, Brownwood and HPU host more than 90 sporting events, concerts, recitals and theater productions which are supported by the local community.
HPU has 990 undergraduate students and is affiliated with the Baptist Church. The ethnic makeup of the student population is 51.8 percent White, 24.4 percent Hispanic or Latino, 12.4 percent Black or African American and 2 percent Two or More Races. Of the 86 majors offered, Visual & Performing Arts, Business and Education are the most popular. There are also 12, Division 3 Men’s and Women’s sports cheer for.
There is no charge for submitting the admissions application. HPU typically offers unconditional admissions to students who have maintained a “B” average or better in high school, whose ACT composite score is 19 or above or whose SAT score is 990 or above. The cost of attendance is $41,900 and first-year students may be awarded merit scholarships worth up to $16,000 per year based on their high school performance and their ACT, SAT scores.
There are more than 25 student organizations on campus and more than 100 majors, minors and pre-professional programs. Chapel is an important part of student life at Howard Payne University. Undergraduate students are required to complete six semesters of Chapel in order to graduate.
