Dallas Baptist University is a medium-sized, 4-year, private university located in Dallas Texas. It was established in 1898 as Decatur Baptist College and was the first junior college in Texas. In 1965, the school relocated to southwest Dallas and became a four-year institution. It was renamed Dallas Baptist University when it began offering graduate-level degrees. The 368-acre campus seems secluded in its hill-country location and provides the opportunity to be a part of a small community while being surrounded by an urban area that has a population of more than six million.
Dallas is a city in Texas and is the seat of Dallas County with portions of the city extending into Collin, Denton, Kaufman and Rockwall counties. In 2019 the population was estimated to be 1,343,266. It is the largest inland metropolitan area in the U.S. that lacks any navigable link to the sea. Dallas is home to nine Fortune 500 companies with twenty-two Fortune 500 companies in the metropolitan area. Dallas Baptist University is one of the more than 41 colleges and universities that are located within this metropolitan area.
DBU is home to 2,883 undergraduate students. At present, the makeup of the student population is 61 percent White, 10 percent Black, 19 percent Latino, 2 percent Asian, 2 percent Two or more races, 7 percent Non-Resident Alien and 59 percent of the students are women. Traditional campus housing is available for first-year students as well as learning communities.
Business is the primary major at DBU with 27 percent of the student population. Interdisciplinary Studies has the second most students with 13 percent and it is followed by Theology and Religious Vocations with 10 percent of the student population. When students are not busy studying or in class, there are 14 men’s and women’s Division II athletic teams to support, and one division I team. (DBU competes in D I Baseball.) There are a number of clubs and organizations, intramural sports as well as fraternities and sororities available to students. To help students grow and learn outside the classroom, there are plenty of volunteer activities and students can also study abroad in Spain or Germany.
Approximately 80 percent of entering freshmen are in the top quarter of their class. Admission to DBU typically requires a median ACT score of 21-26 or an SAT score of 1030-1250. Applicants must complete the DBU Online Application as it is the only application they accept. The estimated cost of attendance is $ $44,825. The average financial aid package is $ $21,845 and the university is committed to meeting 74 percent of financial need.
