Stephen F. Austin State University was chartered by the Texas Legislature in 1917. The first classes were taught in 1923 but not on the present-day campus. Classes had to be held elsewhere because the buildings on the 417 acre campus were not ready to be used. Despite the shaky start, SFA has prospered and grown to a population of almost 13,000 students – 64% of them female… The university population is approximately one third from Dallas, one third from Houston and the other third from all around the United States and 50 different countries.
Some of the departments and majors you should be aware of include the accredited Business Department; they offer a five-year accounting major as well as a BBA in sports business. This is one of only two such programs in the state; the Education Department has an early childhood research center on campus as well as a charter school, the Hospitality Administration degree will train students to manage both restaurants as well as the insanely popular food trucks and the Kinesiology Department offers a pre-physical therapy program. The Fine Arts department is expanding into the 2020 decade both physically and with additional majors. Students interested in the visual and performing arts have access to majors in the areas of both film and stage. The Forestry & Agriculture Department has a 70-acre campus research forest, a 600 acre Agriculture center and offers a pre-veterinary program that has a 95% success rate for admission to vet school. The Science and Math department offers a 2×2 nursing program where after two years of instruction, the next two years are spent just down the road training at a local hospital. The Liberal & Applied Arts Department offers a Mass Communication degree and minors in both pre-law and Social Media. These are just a few highlights of the most popular majors.
SFA has rolling admissions but the scholarship window is between September 1st and February 1st. The acceptance rate for freshman applicants is 62%, the student to faculty ratio is 18:1 and the university supports 18 Division One men’s and women’s sports teams.
High school students interested in band, choir or any of the STEM areas can take advantage of an experiential learning opportunity on the SFA campus during the summer. There is no doubt that this university nestled deep in the Piney Woods has a lot to offer.
