Lamar University is located 92 miles east and slightly north of Houston in Beaumont, Texas. Its 270 acre campus was founded in 1923. Of the 15 thousand students, just over 9,100 of them are undergraduates and there are significantly more women on campus than men. The student population is made up of 53% first generation students, 48% are students of color and there are 62 countries represented on campus.
Like most state universities, Lamar University offers a wide variety of majors. Unlike most state universities, they do an exceptional job of turning out exceptional graduates in multiple disciplines. Take the medical sciences for example; Lamar University boasts a 97% pass rate for the nursing state licensure exam on the first try. They also offer a pre-med curriculum and take part in the Joint Admission Medical Program (JAMP). The Engineering program has six majors and has an online option for Industrial Technology. In addition to a construction management degree, the business school offers a five-year MBA Degree. The College of Education and Human Development offers degrees in counseling, nutrition, health and of course, teacher education. In the Arts and Communication area, those interested in how we hear and why some of us are hearing impaired can find degrees in Deaf Education as well as in Audiology.
Lamar University accepts the Texas Application for State Financial Aid (TAFSA) and offers a tremendous amount of support to students ranging from those who struggle with learning difficulties to financial difficulties to undocumented students to first generation students. They also give students access to the social enterprise called RaiseMe where students planning to attend Lamar University can earn up to $8,000 in microscholarships while still in high school. Good grades, a high GPA and community involvement are just a few of the many ways to earn money for college.
Athletics are a big part of the Lamar University. The Cardinals participate in 15 NCAA Division I men’s and women’s sports and is a member of the Southland Conference. High school athletes can participate in a variety of sports camps in the summer. Also, students contemplating a career in nursing or any of the STEM careers can participate in on-campus summer programs. Lamar University has a vibrant community with lots to do on campus or in the surrounding city.
