The University of Texas at Dallas is a large, 4-year, public university. It is located in a very large city in a suburban setting. This university began as the Graduate Research Center of the Southwest in 1961 because Eugene McDermott, J. Erik Jonsson and Cecil Green, owners of Texas Instruments wanted to see more Texas students stay in state to receive their education.
The Graduate Research Center of the Southwest grew in size and reputation for 29 years before they began accepting undergraduate students. UTD was largely a commuter school until 2009 when the university opened its first residence hall. Now it has grown into one of the best public universities in the country for STEM education and research.
Of the 20, 994 undergraduates attending UTD, the ethnic makeup is 30 percent White, 5 percent Black, 18 percent Latino, 35 percent Asian, 4 percent Two+, and 4 percent NR Alien. Men make up 57 percent of the student population, 95 percent of the students on campus are resident Texans and 52 percent of all freshmen live in campus housing. In addition to their coursework, students take part in over 350 campus organizations, 26 fraternity and sorority chapters and cheer for 13 NCAA Division III American Southwest Conference men’s and women’s teams. There is also a coed esports team.
Students who have been successful in gaining admission to UTD have a median SAT score of 1240-1460 or an ACT score of 26-33. The cost of attending UTD is about $31,000 but the average financial aid package is $15,950. The university commits to meeting 72% of student financial need.
This great learning environment is surrounded by a city that boasts 2 large passenger airports, six major sports teams, 24 Fortune 500 companies – all of which have hired UT Dallas graduates and is experiencing the most job growth in the country.
